The world’s most consumed fruit has an untold story. The industrialization of the humble tomato preceded the globalized economy that was to follow. It is now as much of a commodity as wheat, rice, or petrol. The tomato’s ability to create strongly identifiable products, such as ketchup, pizza sauce, soups, sauces, drinks or frozen dishes is unbeatable.

As early as 1897, ten years before Ford started to mass-produce cars, Heinz was already converting tomatoes into standardized cans of puree. They were one of the first companies to understand the power of branding. They banned unions, imposed uniform standards of production, and established genetic laboratories that ensured identical tomato plantations all around the world.

Today, wherever you are in the world, you can eat the same tomatoes. This film will trace the journey of tomato paste from Africa, Italy, China, and America to show the consequences of this global business.

  2. Thank you for sharing. The adulteration of our food is at an all time high. The fact that the
manufacturers are trying to 'save money", yet can add ingredients not listed on the label is
disturbing. Some humans are HIGHLY allergic to soy and need to know that it is added in
large qualtities to products, and NOT being listed on the label is greedy. And, this issue is just
the tip of the iceberg. Most humans are unaware that chicken carcasses are injected with a saline solution which adds a ton of sodium, pig meat has had added pink color because normally, pig flesh is
GREY and not appealing. Go vegan for the animals.

  3. That's not what in our country other's just want a distraction ,,,,, somebody going bad things just to earn bad money

  4. Super interesting! Thank you for posting!

  5. Toronto says:

I smiled every time they showed the factory owner or an image of him with a cigarette in his mouth.

  6. "Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if Labor had not first existed. Labor is superior to capital, and deserves much the higher consideration." — Abraham Lincoln.

  7. The tomato has gone full circle, from being considered toxic back to being considered toxic again.

  8. M says:

I saw the original film,Empire of Red Gold. I had been wondering why all the jarred tomato sauces were no longer tasting good. Now I'm forced to buy organic, imported Italian canned tomatoes to make my sauce or to buy tomatoes to do it, which is very expensive. I use organic, Cento San Marzano tomatoes. There's nothing in the cans besides the tomatoes with their organic version.

  9. Dominic Fong says:

That's because the c c p is pure evil, they'll gladly snatch up anything so they can monopolize it, then you poor souls have to buy it from them.

  10. Chris says:

This was far more interesting than I first suspected.

  12. paca_bill says:

Very interesting video, but not surprising, the way the world economy is evolving. At the end, what that really tells me though, with the Chinese starting to eat tomato products, and all of the additives, including high fructose corn syrup, is that obesity and diabetes will skyrocket in China in the next two generations. If you can, grow and eat local!

  13. Art Diary says:

Good thing i only consume banana ketchup😂

  14. repbacchista says:

this whole "documentary" is just the "west" complaning that they aren't not the only ones pushing tomatos cutted with some cardboard now; >( "oh china belt and road initiative blá blá blá we are the good ones" It makes no difference to the rest of the world. To-meh-to to-ma-to….

  15. This is China's practice – invade your neighbour, relocate millions of Han Chinese to overwhelm the native population, suppress the native population and culture. The Western Democracies have turned a blind eye to Chinese atrocities but their eyes are being opened.

  16. caring does not keep your doors open. I tried that and lost everything. Kindness only kills the caregiver. The "loyalty" of an employee is worthless, especially these days. The only decision IS to strip it bare in commodities markets :(.

  17. Thank you for your video! Morning Star=Lucifer. Wake-up people Chris Ruther works for the dark side. Only God knows what else could be lurking in these products, but I came across some dark stories, regarding tomato sauces and paste.

  18. please block all Chinese produces riddled with corruption look as this so be general like temu or shein

  19. I will never ever look at a tomato in the same way again. Think I will grow my own……..

  20. nasty thing to say about workers
